Based on a creative blend of Garnatxa, Samsó, Ull de Llebre
(Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon, and Macabeu, Cellers
Santamaria’s Grand Recosind casts a black-crimson robe followed by
spicy aromas of wild cherries and black plums. The wine’s core of
velvety black fruits yields to complex, mature notes of leather,
tobacco, wintergreen, bitter chocolate, and mushrooms. Plump and
silky on the palate thanks to an extended aging period, the 2011
Criança presents lovely suggestions of red plum and bitter cherry
fruit complicated by barrel notes of cigar tobacco, smoke, vanilla
bean, and cedary pencil shavings. Tangy acidity and fine tannins
emerge as the wine segues to its long, brisk, and complex finish.
The wine is priced absurdly low for its superb quality and the
extended aging it enjoys, and will serve as a terrific partner with
barbecued meats, potato tapas, and hearty eggplant preparations.
Enjoy now and over the coming decade.
