Domaine de Durban is the Beaumes-de-Venise’s premier producer, and
their 2014 rouge from fifty-year-old vines is breathtakingly
delicious. Based on a blend of Grenache (70%), Syrah (25%), and
Mourvedre, Durban’s Beaumes-de-Venise rouge casts a translucent
purple-ruby robe followed by classic southern Rhone aromas of
kirsch, red currants, leather, herbal garrigue, and stony soil.
Fresh and vibrant on the palate, the wine’s kernel of
cherry-scented Grenache fruit meshes seamlessly with the leather,
mushroom, and pepper overtones provided by the Syrah and Mourvedre.
Firm tannins frame the wine’s core of fruit and segue the wine to a
long, appetizing finish. This sensational southern Rhone rouge
drinks amazingly well today while possessing the energy and reserve
to promise five to seven years’ maturation in your cool cellar.
