Gigondas superstars Eric and Sophie Ughetto, employing sustainable
principles in the vineyard and whole-cluster, wild yeast
fermentations in the cellar, have issued a splendid, wildly
aromatic Vacqueyras from the delicious and precocious 2014 vintage.
Casting a translucent plum ruby robe, Roubine’s 2014 Vacqueyras – a
classic blend of Grenache (70%) accented by Mourvèdre, Syrah and
Cinsault – opens with soaring aromas of herbal garrigue, licorice,
cured meats, and boysenberry fruit alongside earthy notes of tar
and leather. Youthfully invigorating on the attack, Roubine’s
Vacqueyras stains the palate with notes of black plums, black
cherries, licorice, sassafras, and a stony soil signature. The wine
gracefully leaves the palate with another lashing of stony terroir
before finishing long and complex with reprises of herbal garrigue,
violets, tar, and black licorice. Buy plenty to keep you fortified
through the winter. Pair it now and over the coming five years with
roast lamb, baked eggplant, cured meats, braised rabbit, and game.
