Arneis is usually planted to the sandy soils of Piedmont’s Roero
district. Paitin, however, dedicates a portion of the noble
calcareous soils on its estate in the Barbaresco’s Neive zone to
cultivate this reference-standard Arneis. This difference in zone
and soil type is apparent from the moment the wine is poured.
Paitin’s Arneis shows a deeper lemon-gold robe followed by an
especially complex floral bouquet highlighted by notes of sweet
almonds, acacia wood and Barbaresco’s limestone-rich soil. Richer
in texture and conveying an unusually brilliant, snappy fruit
expression, Paitin’s Arneis explodes on the palate with suggestions
of honeydew melon, acacia, Golden Delicious apples and juicy Comice
pears. Smoky minerality sneaks in on the wine’s long, brisk finish
and elevates Paitin’s Arneis to the elite ranks of this
aromatically complex and expressive varietal. Enjoy this benchmark
rendition now and over the next two years with white pizzas, pastas
tossed with olive oil and white sauces, fresh golden trout, and
sautéed seasonal squashes.
