Loire Valley, FranceMarc Ollivier, the affable, hard-working genius behind the Domaine de la Pepiere, crafts some of the finest expressions of authentic, naturally made, soil-driven Muscadets. 2017 is showing itself as a lovely, balanced Muscadet vintage, and the domain’s newly released example shows its remarkable freshness, cut, and verve. A limpid, green-inflected pale straw gold in the glass, the wine casts a mineral-driven bouquet of flint, granite, green melon, and Key lime zest. The palate glows with pure expressions of crisp green apples, crunchy gooseberries, white grapefruit, and Meyer lemon, all backed by brisk acidity and pungent minerals. Pepiere’s 2017 La Pepie finishes clean, long, and insanely delicious, which makes it drink well by itself, but ideally succeeds as a foil for fresh oysters, halibut, branzino, clams, mussels, and savory seafood stews. Enjoy now and over the coming five years.
