Some wines stand apart from everything else, and defy easy comparisons. Bodegas Gomez Nevado's wine is one of those sorts. The isolated Sierra Morena mountains north of Corduba is far from Andalucia's famous Sherry districts, and the grape of choice is the central Spanish Airen grape, This bottling, named Dorado for it's distinct gold color, is aged first in clay amphora before spending 15 years in a Sherry-style Solera under flor, yielding a wine very similar to an en Rama Amontillado, with strong salty, nutty notes, while the Very complex and best served lightly chilled. While the comparison to Sherry is clear, the different grape varieties (a blend of Airen, Pedro Ximenez and Palomino) and terroir give this wine a distinctly fuller bodied note than traditional Amontillados.
