Sherry, Andalucia, Spain
Long dismissed, misunderstood, and nearly forgotten, the unique wines of Sherry are making a modest comeback in the popular imagination. We couldn't be happier about it, and after decades spent in the dusty corner of the bottom shelf, we are proud to offer this spectacular "reserve" Sherry from Bodegas La Cigarrera's beachside Solera in Sanlucar de Barremeda.
While all Sherry flows through the complex Solera system to achive its inimitable flavor profile, these VOS sherries (Vinum Optimum Signatum) are distinguished by the speed with which they move; to achieve this designation the wine in the Solera barrels must have an average age of at least 20 years, giving the gorgeous nutty and yeasty flavors so much more time to set, yielding a significantly more complex, powerful, and detailed wine.
La Cigarerra's cellar master Ignacio Hidalgo was reluctant to part with these Sherries, kept for generations as family heirlooms. The 20 year designation on this particular wine is a guess, and the average age of the wine is somewhere between 20 and 80 years.
