Sudtirol, Alto Adige, Italy
2017 is shaping up to be a warm, full-bodied and welcoming vintage for northern Italian white wines. Italy’s Alto Adige region sits on the border with Austria, and the intense, mineral-driven Austrian aesthetic is immediately evident in Girlan’s lovely Pinot Bianco. The wine opens with a green-glinted pale lemon gold color. Swirl it to reveal smoky, soil-driven aromas of green apples, orchard blossoms, and meadow flowers. On the palate the wine shows crisp, bracing notes of juicy fresh lemons, green pineapple, pear skin, and fresh bay leaf. Expressions of crushed stones, lemon peel, and crunchy green apples emerge on the snappy and satisfying finish. This is a terrific warm weather selection that will pair nicely with Dover sole, brook trout, grilled zucchini, and other lighter seasonal fare. Drink now or over the next three years.
