Casa de Mouraz’s 2016 Vinho Tinto, a blend of Touriga Nacional (70%) and eight other indigenous varieties, offers a translucent black-ruby hue and complex aromas of black cherry skin, cardamom, cinnamon, camphor, wintergreen, and smoky granitic soil. Fresh and vibrant on the attack, the Vinho Tinto stains the palate with granite-infused black plum and boysenberry fruit accented by hints of Earl Grey tea, black peppercorns, cured meats, and dried herbs. Focused and persistent, the wine finishes long and characterful with savory tannins propelling suggestions of mushrooms, sassafras, nutmeg, and gentian root. This is a serious wine – and a serious value – for the complexity and character it delivers. We recommend enjoying this now and over the coming five years with grilled fare: eggplant, bell peppers, and Portobello mushrooms for our vegetarian friends; and marinated chicken, lamb, beef, and goat for our omnivorous clientele.
