Graves, Bordeaux, France
Graves is one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive terroirs. Named for the gravelly soils that give the region its name and contribute to its inimitable goût, Graves’ white and red wines are considered top drawer by many avid Bordeaux aficionados. Now approaching its twelfth year, the 2010 Château du Grand Bos is just beginning to reveal all its mature glory. Reflecting a translucent burnished claret color, the Grand Bos casts a classic aged Graves bouquet of cassis, red plums, balsam, Belgian chocolate, and cedar. Supple and suave on the palate, the wine juxtaposes classic Left Bank notes of currants, cherries, and cedar with mature expressions of vanilla bean, tamari, tobacco, shiitake mushrooms, orange pekoe tea, and leather. The wine’s tannins are now melting into its sappy red fruited core, resulting in a full, savory, marvelously complex Graves rouge. Enjoy now and over the next seven years with rib roasts of beef, leg of lamb, sautéed lentils, grilled eggplant, mature hard cheeses, and hearty fare enhanced by shavings of black truffles.
