Saumur, Loire Valley, France
Mélanie and Aymeric Hilaire established their domaine in 2006 on the outskirts of Saumur, near the new Loire Valley appellation of Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame. Mélaric’s wines stylistically fuse Saumur’s perfumed limestone soil signature with the pungent igneous soils of the Anjou to the west. Mélaric’s superb 2019 Le Tandem reflects a translucent black plum robe followed by lifted, high-toned aromas of black currants, spicy cinnamon, red peppercorns, and dusty earth. A blend of Cabernet Franc (60%) and Grolleau, Mélaric’s Le Tandem graces the palate with crunchy cassis and black cherry fruit enlivened by a bright limestone mineral undercurrent and notes of wintergreen, fresh herbs, and cranberries. Delicious, distinctive, and filled with personality, this is a superb choice for a characterful, easy-drinking winter rouge and a fine choice for a transparent warm weather red that can take a chill and still deliver the goods. Enjoy this natural, minimal-intervention Loire Valley rouge now and over the coming two years with pan-seared pork chops, dry rubbed ribs, burgers, herb roasted chicken, sautéed squashes, and fresh chèvres.
