Matelica, Marche, Italy

Matelica is one of the two most famous zones for Verdicchio in the Marches region between Umbria and Italy’s Adriatic coast. Inland and boasting some of the Marches’ highest altitude vineyards, Matelica is renowned for Verdicchios that offer exquisite finesse, chalky minerality, and impressive nerve and drive. ColleStefano’s 2021 Verdicchio reflects a pale, green-glinted straw color and deep, limestone-driven aromas of almond blossoms, lemon zest, and green apple skin. Brisk and crystalline on the palate, the wine offers suggestions of Pippin apple flesh, Key lime zest, sweet sage, and freshly grated ginger. Herbal and citrus notes reemerge on the long finish, followed by suggestions of blanched almonds, white pepper, fresh fennel, and wet stones. ColleStefano’s classical and elegant 2021 Verdicchio will prove a lovely choice for sipping by itself or for pairing with all types of seafood and vegetable dishes. Drink young to enjoy all the wine’s brisk fruit and lip-dusting minerality. Our favorite vintage yet!
