Barolo’s great Cordero di Montezemolo estate has been attentively run by the same family for nineteen generations. Performing like a fine Barolo, yet more immediately delicious and approachable, Cordero di Montezemolo’s 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo – crafted from the family’s vineyards in Alba and Cherasco augmented by young-vine Nebbiolo from their superb Barolo vineyards – offers gorgeous, classic Nebbiolo aromas of dusty cherries, leafy tobacco, vine smoke, dried rose petals, and chalky limestone earth. Brisk and energetic, the wine layers the palate with waves of tangy pie cherry and cranberry fruit framed by savory, dusty tannins and hints of rose-scented potpourri, gentian root, button mushrooms, and blond leather. The wine’s tannic structure persists throughout, which suggests that it has plenty of ageing potential, but also drinks phenomenally well now. Pair now and over the coming decade with hearty fare like braised short ribs, stuffed portobello mushrooms, egg-rich tajarin with a butter-sage sauce, as well as everyday fare like burgers, pizza, shepherd’s pie, and lasagna.
