We love the crisp, quaffable white wines from Gascony in southwestern France. Gilles Baumann of Domaine des Cassagnoles fashions a rare Gros Manseng cuvee that spotlights this delicious but relatively unknown varietal. Brilliant pale lemon-gold in the glass, Cassagnoles’ Gros Manseng summons refreshment with deep aromas of smoky gunflint, sage, grapefruit, yellow melon and sandy minerals. On the palate, Cassagnoles’s Gros Manseng bursts with a clean, snappy citrus fruit expression followed by hints of basil, sorrel and freshly ground white pepper. Briskly acidic but full of charm, body and fruit, the wine finishes with clean melon and citrus fruit that leaves you licking your chops in anticipation of the next sip. Chill this well and enjoy it as an economical aperitif, or, ideally, pair it with shellfish, light freshwater fish dishes or vegetable frittatas.
