The Domaine le Couroulu is a superstar in its home village of Vacqueyras. Couroulu’s impressive portfolio of Southern Rhône wines is a frequent spotlight in these pages, and this month we’re again delighted to present the domaine’s old-school Vacqueyras Cuvée Classique. A blend of Grenache (60%), Syrah (30%), and Mourvèdre, Couroulu’s Classique presents a translucent rusty garnet color and textbook Vacqueyras aromas of sun-warmed cherries, ripe plums, menthol, and black peppercorns. Full, ample, and satisfying, the wine layers the palate with wild cherry and spicy plum fruit followed by complex notes of peppery salumi, licorice, leather, and herbal garrigue. Traditionally styled and showing the warm precociousness of the 2017 vintage, Couroulu’s Classique finishes with fine, lip-dusting tannins and echoes of spicy red fruits, salumi, leather, and dusty limestone. This is a must-try selection for fans of traditional Southern Rhône wines. Enjoy this rustic beauty now and over the next five to seven years with cured meats, mild sheep’s milk cheeses, braised beef or lamb with rosemary and olives, or with rich, slow-cooked ratatouille.
