Montlouis and its sibling appellation across the river, Vouvray, are two of the wine world’s reference points for the noble Chenin Blanc grape. Before settling in Montlouis and purchasing the domaine they would revitalize as Les Pierres Écrites, Coralie and Anthony Rassin honed their viticultural and winemaking talents at Paul Jaboulet, François Villard, and Pierre Gonon. The skills they acquired from these world-renowned masters have paid dividends, as Les Pierres Écrites is now in the top echelon of Chenin-focused domaines. Sporting a medium lemon-gold color, the Petits Boulay offers classic Chenin aromas of sweet pear, apricot, and peach fruit imbued with crystalline clay-chalk minerals. Buoyed by laser-like acidity and riveting tension, suggestions of crisp quince, bee pollen, honeysuckle, and fennel appear on the fore-palate before broadening and gaining flesh mid-palate to add notes of pear and apple. Green pineapple, Pippin apple, preserved lemon, and pear skin join perfumed minerals to segue the wine to its long, zesty, bone-dry finish. Enjoy this brilliant single-vineyard Montlouis now and over the coming ten years with poached delicately-sauced fish dishes, sautéed squashes, fresh chèvres, shellfish, or light chicken preparations.
