Burgundy, FranceA thrilling new offering from Sangouard, this is superb, terroir-driven white Burgundy and a terrific value. Third-generation Burgundian vigneron Pierre-Emmanuel Sangouard farms 25 acres in the Mâconnais’ most hallowed terroirs. From a steep, south-facing parcel at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson, Sangouard takes full advantage of the vineyard’s superb situation and classic clay-limestone soil to craft a cru Saint-Véran of impressive depth, texture, and precision. A bright golden color in the glass, the wine brilliantly expresses its Burgundian origins with aromas of pungent limestone soil, glazed hazelnuts, chalky minerals, and toasted brioche. Deep, intense, and concentrated on the palate, the wine fuses a juicy core of buttery lemon curd and tart yellow apple fruit with notes of pâté brisée, brioche, and a penetrating limestone mineral undercurrent. Brilliant acidity buoys the fleshy kernel of orchard fruit and propels the wine to its long, Burgundian, limestone-driven finish. Served cool it will wow as a welcome wine, or partner it with herb-roasted chicken, broiled salmon, trout amandine, chanterelles in a cream sauce, boudin blanc, and light pork preparations.
