Matelica, Marche, Italy
Matelica is one of the two most famous zones for the Verdicchio variety in the Marches region between Umbria and Italy’s Adriatic coast. Boasting some of the Marches’ highest altitude vineyards, Matelica is renowned for Verdicchios that offer more flesh and body than elsewhere in the region. From the esteemed Garofoli estate comes the 2020 Supèra Verdicchio, showing a medium lemon-gold color and a fresh, herb-driven nose of quince, yellow apple skin, smoky minerals, lemon thyme, and tarragon. Rich and ample on the palate, the wine teems with notes of lemon oil, pear, tangerine zest, high-toned limestone, and sweet almond meal. The brisk, resinous palate texture segues to herbal notes on the finish, complemented by further suggestions of fresh ginger, hawthorn blossoms, fresh fennel shavings, and lip-dusting minerals. Refined, elegant, and bursting with character, Garofoli’s Supèra will prove a lovely choice wine for sipping by itself or for pairing with all types of seafood and vegetable dishes. Drink now and over the next two years to enjoy all the wine’s zesty, lip-smacking fruit.
