Pouilly Fuisse, Burgundy, France
Pouilly-Fuissé is considered by most experts to be the finest terroir in Burgundy’s Maconnais zone. Located south of the Côte d’Or, the Mâconnais’ gently sloping hills of chalk and limestone soils are perfectly suited for growing fine, soil-inflected Chardonnays. We are big fans of the 2019 Burgundy vintage, and this comfortably-priced bottling from Jadot shows why. Casting a medium green-glinted gold color, Jadot’s 2019 Pouilly-Fuissé opens with limestone-inflected suggestions of white flowers, lemon zest, crushed stones, and vanilla bean. Suave and textured on the palate, elegant nuances of white tea, whole wheat toast, apple blossoms, and lemon custard mesh with 2019 vintage’s tangy acidity and vivid soil signature. Complementary barrel tones emerge as the wine transitions to its long, limestone lip-dusting finish. This is a lovely, authentic, superb expression of Pouilly-Fuissé that can be enjoyed now and over the coming five years with salmon, pork, roast chicken, duck, boudin blanc, and light pork dishes.
