Gavi, Piedmont, Italy
Based on the Cortese grape, Gavi is Piedmont’s most celebrated white wine and one of only a handful of Italian whites to be honored with full DOCG status. Olim Bauda’s 2020 Gavi opens with a brilliant, green-glinted lemon-gold color and fresh aromas of lemon pith, white peaches, green melon, and yellow rose petals. On the palate, the wine unfurls with juicy Meyer lemon, canary melon, and yellow plum notes followed by suggestions of citrus blossoms, blanched almonds, and lemon thyme. Tangy acidity and a bright tangerine note segue the wine to its crisp and lip-smackingly delicious finish, which echoes further hints of juicy citrus, lemon balm, and chalky minerals. Drink this fantastic, affordable, and delicious Gavi young to capture the wine’s freshness, crispness, and zip. Enjoy with fried trout, snapper, soups, vegetable frittatas, sauteed zucchini, steamed clams, and halibut en papillote.
