Samuel Tinon is among the young Turks of the Hungarian wine scene, who are reviving the world-class vineyards and winemaking traditions of Hungary. His true passion is in the noble, sweet, botrytised wines of Tokaji, but part of that long term project is in finding and clearing old vineyards, plots once as famous as any Grand Cru in Burgundy that had returned to wild forest as Tokaji's wine industry withered under communist rule. In order to work out the character of these vineyards, Samuel makes this dry wine, which takes less time to make than the sweeter wines, so he doesn't have to wait five or seven years to find where the very best vineyards are. The result is delightful. The nose shows intense lemon and lime and strawberry fruit notes with a smoky aspect that reveals the volcanic character of the region. The palate is dry, full, and complex, with notes of smoke, cheese, salty and charcol-like minerals alongside grace notes of honeycomb and fresh fruit. A wildly complex wine for a wide range of hearty country fare, duck, hare, pork, and rich cheeses.
