Yamhill-Carlton District, Willamette Valley, Oregon
After nine years of aging, 2013 Willamette Valley Pinots are now coming into their own, especially those, like this offering from Trisaetum, that were picked after the early rains and given time to fully ripen in the late season sun. Casting a lovely rusty garnet color, the wine is redolent of sweet, perfectly mature Pinot: loganberries, Morello cherries, and black cherries mingle with dark basaltic minerality, rose petals, and hints of star anise. Warm and suave on the palate thanks to extended ageing, the wine adds notes of red currants, cinnamon, sarsaparilla, and a touch of vanillin oak. The wine finishes long and (dare we say) Burgundian, with reprises of salty, lip-smacking minerality and firm, tactile grip. This is a superb expression of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA that has just entered its window of peak drinkability and will reward another seven years in your cool cellar. Pair with roast chicken, duck, rich potatoes au gratin, stews, and other hearty fare.
