Paestum, Campania, Italy
The De Conciliis Estate, located in the beautiful Paestum region of Campania, is a leader in the wave of small producers making Campanian wines of superior quality. Sourcing grapes from high-elevation vineyards in the relatively uncharted Cilento zone on the regional coast, Bruno De Conciliis specializes in full-bodied, fruit-forward wines from southern Italy’s noble Aglianico grape. Conciliis’ Donnaluna (named for Charlie Parker’s and Miles Davis’s bebop jazz standard, “Donna Lee”) reflects a dense plum-ruby robe followed by cinnamon and rose-tinged expressions of macerated cherries, ripe plums, and blackberries. The wine layers the palate with expressions of plums, black cherries, tamari, violets, and licorice. Hints of cola, sarsaparilla, fine tannins, and dusty soil enter the picture as the wine transitions to its long, sumptuous finish. This is superb Aglianico for those who adore its spicy character and inherent ability to transmit its underlying soil signature but prefer not to wait the long ageing duration required for Taurasi or Aglianico del Vulture. Enjoy now and over the coming five years with broiled quail or squab, roasts of beef and lamb, rustic pizzas, and pastas dressed with sundried tomatoes and toasted pine nuts.
